Sackback Writing-arm Chair
|
I first became interested in building smaller writing chairs a few years ago at a customer’s instigation. A couple from Massachusetts drove all the way down here to see my work and to talk to me about making them a small, "ladies" sack-back writing-arm chair. Though at first I had little interest in such a project (preferring the large writing-arm chairs,)their kindness and obvious admiration for my furniture persuaded me to look into making a really nice chair for them. Both they and I were very happy with the result, which is basically what you see here. (Now, I really like doing these small writing-arm chairs along with the large ones.)
This piece has elements from several good New England chairs that I have seen. The carved, secondary comb gives this piece a lively appearance. The dovetailed drawer has a scratch-bead moulding on the bottom perimeter to match the paddle’s edge moulding. The drawer also has a hidden catch and release mechinism. Shown with Connecticut/Rhode Island turnings. This chair would look very nice in bamboo turnings.

My father, still an active botanist in the field and at the university at 82, models a writing chair for me.
